13 Simple Self Care Ideas For Busy Moms

Do you ever feel like you are running on overload and not having time to stop and take a breath? Self-care is much more than simply pampering yourself.  It’s you taking care of you.  Think of all the things on a daily basis most of us do for others.  Work duties, chores at home, family time, etc.  All these things you do for others surely do not help you if you don’t take care of yourself first.

Being overwhelmed with the daily 9 to 5 grind, sports activities, getting dinner ready, taking care of a sink full of dishes, evening homework; all the things you do raising children and caring for family members is sometimes more like a job and less enjoyable at times as well.

Take Care Of Yourself First

Self-care is about you, but not only. Unless you are living on a desert island, almost certainly someone else, or many others, depend on you in some way for support. This may be very practical, as in physical or financial. Or it may be emotional or social support.

The point is, we cannot support others as we need to or would like to if we are struggling to keep our heads above water. You have heard the saying many times. You can’t take care of others until you take care of yourself first.

Self-Care Helps Reduce Stress

It is during times of increased stress we absolutely cannot turn a blind eye to self-care.  If we are sick, how can we take care of others?  If we are worn out and exhausted from working 50-60 hours a week, how can we be productive in any other aspect of our lives?  That’s not living; that’s simply existing.

And this is why self-care is extremely important.

When was the last time you did something just for you?  Self-care is important during stressful times, but we shouldn’t stop there.  That’s like ignoring the temperature gauge on an overheating vehicle.  If you wait too long to address the cooling system, the whole thing shuts down and the car overheats.

And now you’re stuck on the side of the road in a cloud of smoke waiting for roadside assistance and a tow truck.  Proper maintenance is key.

This is a win-win situation here.  In practicing self-care, you get to enjoy a little pampering, take better care of yourself (inside and out) and reap the many benefits.  There really isn’t a downside to self-care.

Here are a few simple self-care ideas to help you get started:

  • A walk, jog or run being mindful of being outdoors and all its beauty
  • A 5- or 10-minute morning meditation to get the day started
  • Get out with friends for drinks
  • Get out with friends for a painting class
  • Take a pottery class.
  • Eat something green every day
  • Write in a journal
  • Read an inspirational book
  • Join a fitness class
  • Get a massage
  • Get a manicure and/or pedicure
  • Zone out in a bubble bath with candles and soft music
  • Listen to your favorite playlist, podcast or audiobook

Self-care is limitless and it’s as individual as you.  If you enjoy watching a romantic comedy and helps you stop overthinking and relaxes you, go for it.  If you’d rather go for a walk/ run to help you get centered, by all means, do that.  Whatever your heart desires.  This is about feeding your soul so you can be the best version of yourself

  1. Getting outside every day for even just a few minutes makes such a huge difference! I have noticed this with both myself and my kids. If the weather is not cooperative too many days in a row, we are all feeling off. Thank you for sharing this list. ❤️

  2. What an awesome post, I love all the time and walking my pup, listening to music, and mani, pedis are my fav!!! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  3. I love this so much! I am a busy working mom of 9 trying to start my own business and this is something I am not good at prioritizing. I have made a goal to do better with this!
My favorite things to do for myself are listening to music to boost my mood or doing yoga to relax and reset.

  4. Great ideas! I’m not a mom yet, but I’m a nanny to an amazing family and I always tell my boss and her husband to get out and go on vacations. My husband and I spend the night while my boss and her husband get some time alone and a break from the madness! hah . 🙂

  5. Podcasts are definitely one of the ways I do self-care. Although now that I’m at home all the time right now I’ve got to figure out a different way/time to listen to them.
