Treasure Cay Family Vacation

Is anyone ready to go island hopping in the Abacos? The Abacos is a chain of islands in the Bahamas. It is about 120 miles of paradise with a panoramic view of beauty that awaits you.

We had decided on a trip to the Bahamas with our very dear friends and their boys. Not only would we have great company on this island vacation, but we will also be spending Christmas together. A week-long vacation in paradise.

We rented a three bedroom condo at the Bahama Beach Club in Treasure Cay. Known as the best beach in the Carribean by Carribean Travel and Life, it definitely did not disappoint.

To get to the island, we flew into Fort Lauderdale, FL then took a smaller plane into Marsh Harbour. From there, we rented a van (to fit all 8 of us) and drove out to Treasure Cay. The drive was about 45 minutes to an hour. Be sure to get your international driving permit before your trip. We went to the local AAA office to apply for ours and the process was pretty simple.

Before we headed out to Treasure Cay, we stopped at Maxwell’s Supermarket to stock up on food for the week. The official currency is the Bahamian dollar which is the equivalent value to the US dollar. However, both are acceptable forms of payment throughout the islands.

The drive to Treasure Cay was uneventful. Driving on the left side of the road is definitely different for us but it did not take long for us to get used to it. The roads were a bit bumpy but doable. There is not much to see on this drive but once we arrive at the resort, it was pure paradise. WOW!

This is our home for the week. Beautiful, isn’t it? What a view to wake up to! The Bahama Beach Club is located in a small coastal community and most people get around the island by golf cart.

We settled into our condo and asked the boys what they wanted to do first. In unison, they screamed “Swimming!” of course. No stopping them even after a long journey getting here.

The beach and view are breathtaking. The sands are white and so soft against the clear blue ocean. The water is perfect to swim in. What I love about this resort is because of the small community it is set in, the beach is pretty private. It is only 3 miles long and with not that many people on the beach making it a much more enjoyable stay. We did not have to rush out to “save” our beach chairs. There were plenty of them.

We enjoyed our walks along the shore where we were able to have some girl time. (We were the only girls on the trip)

The resort has a poolside bar and restaurant on site. While we did most of the cooking ourselves, there were several times where we just wanted to relax and ate at the restaurant.

We were also able to enjoy some cocktails at the poolside bar!

As the sun sets, the cool breeze came in making hanging out by the beach or pool even more magical.

There is so much to do on the island besides lounging on the beach/ pool. We took a day trip for a deep sea fishing excursion.

This included a boat ride out into the Carribean Sea; jumping into the deep ocean for a swim and some snorkeling.

We watched as our boat captain dived into the ocean for some spearfishing. What a sight to see! And all the things he brought back up from the bottom of the ocean!

We then stopped at Green Turtle Cay for an afternoon of exploring, swimming with the stingrays while our captain and his partner prepared us a lovely meal from all their catch.

The food was exquisite. I have never had fresh seafood as in “catch and eat”. Very delicious meal for sure!

On the way back, we stopped for some snorkeling. The boys enjoyed snorkeling here and being able to see the various fish and the coral reef.

We then ventured off to No Name Cay to visit the swimming pigs. We can’t go to the Abacos and not visit the swimming pigs.

Another day trip we did was a boat ride to Great Guana Cay. It is an islet located in the center of the Abacos. We chose this day to visit there because of all the hype about Nippers and their roasted pig meals.

The beach here was a bit calmer and the boys just loved swimming here. They did not want to leave at all!

Nippers is a very busy place with lots of young people and music. While it was a great experience with the beach and swimming, it was too much of a party scene for us. The food was good and we enjoyed the roasted pig.

We were able to catch this beautiful sunset on our way back to our condo.

And there were so many more beautiful sunsets while there.

We had planned for family photos on the beach and had some fun getting these. The boys were not too cooperative as they just wanted to swim. But they did good!

We loved this trip as we were able to travel with our very dear friends and their boys. We typically travel with just the four of us but this was definitely one of our best and most memorable trips.
